Sherman planning commission approves zoning definition for nonprofit art galleries

The Town of Sherman Planning & Zoning Commission on April 9 unanimously approved an amendment to Section 610 of the zoning regulations to add a definition for an “ART GALLERY — Operated Not for Profit,” permitting exhibition and sale of visual arts, community art-making space, instruction and fundraising events.
The change, proposed by the Sherman Artists Association and presented to the commission by Linda Hubbard, would allow an organization registered as a 501(c)(3) to operate a gallery that can exhibit and sell fine art and crafts, host openings and run teaching programs. “Visual Arts are different from performance arts,” Hubbard told the commission, listing 2‑D works such as painting and photography and 3‑D works such as pottery, ceramics and sculpture.
Administrative Clerk Christine Branson told the board that legal notice ran in the Town Tribune on March 26 and April 2, 2026, and that seven neighboring towns and planning agencies were notified by certified mail. The commission also read into the record a letter from Tucker Beckett, director of WESTCoG, reporting “no impact concern.” Two members of the public, E. DiFranco and E. Langster, spoke in favor; no one spoke in opposition.
Commissioners moved quickly from deliberation to approval. A motion to adopt the amendment was made by A. Weisberg and seconded by J. Siegel; the vote was recorded as unanimous. The amendment lists an effective date of May 1, 2026.
The change is targeted at nonprofit galleries (501(c)(3) organizations). During later discussion the chair said the commission will consider whether additional changes are needed to accommodate for‑profit galleries as part of a broader regulations review. No formal action on for‑profit galleries was taken at the April 9 meeting.
