The Wolfeboro Select Board approved changes on June 17 to the town’s gas permit process that move the department from a thorough permit application review toward a more administrative intake and fewer automatic inspections. Jeffrey Hinderliter, the town’s planning director, outlined the proposal and said the change is intended to speed permit turnaround while still requiring certified installers to comply with applicable NFPA and state codes.
Under the new process, the town will accept a completed permit application and stamp it administratively; inspections would occur only if requested or if issues arise. Hinderliter said the change is aimed at efficiency and that industry professionals are highly trained and certified. He told the board homeowners would not be allowed to self-install and that installer certification would be recorded on the permit form.
Select Board member John Thurston moved to approve the Planning Department’s gas permitting updates; the motion was seconded by Dave Senecal and passed 4-0. The change was set to begin July 1 with a plan to reevaluate on Oct. 1. Board members pressed for clarity on where installer certification would be submitted and raised concerns about contractors stretching rules; staff said certifications will be submitted to the town via the new form.
