Select Board approves pilot to add black pickleball lines on two Foss Field courts

The Wolfeboro Select Board on June 17 approved a pilot to add black pickleball court lines on courts 3 and 4 at Foss Field as a trial to ease conflicts between tennis and pickleball players. The motion, made by Select Board member Linda Murray and seconded by Dave Senecal, passed 4-0.
Resident Grant Hatch told the board pickleball play has surged and recommended simpler line patterns and a color-coded paddle-rack system to manage play. He noted that accepting a USTA grant for resurfacing would restrict changes to the courts until 2031. Parks & Recreation Director Christine Collins said resurfacing could be completed by the end of July but that the town is waiting for the volunteer group to supply racks for the proposed scheduling system. "White board provided by parks/rec; trying to find a usage system that works for all," Collins said.
Board members discussed a phased approach; Vice Chair Brian Deshaies suggested painting one court first to evaluate; Murray and Thurston favored painting black lines. The board asked Parks & Rec to study costs of repainting and to monitor morning peak usage. Brant Bower volunteered to paint lines at no cost and warned against using black tape, saying it can leave adhesive residue that affects subsequent paint.
The pilot applies initially to courts 3–4; staff will report back on outcomes and any needs to modify policy or accept grants that could limit future changes.
