Bridgeport Fire Department reports 117 calls in August, offers free detector installations and new address sign program

Fire Chief Smigiel briefed the Bridgeport Charter Township Board on department activity and community programs at the Sept. 3 meeting, reporting 117 calls for service in August 2024 and 893 calls year-to-date.
Smigiel said August was one of the department’s busiest months this year and warned residents to prepare for increased calls as cooler weather arrives. He urged residents to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and noted the department can arrange free installations through the MI Prevention program in coordination with state, local and private partners. The department also began an address sign program, funded initially by funds raised by the Fire Department Auxiliary (events such as a pancake breakfast). The signs are intended to increase visibility of rural addresses and indicate driveway distances to assist response; the minutes note dozens of homes are more than 500 feet from the roadway. Letters have been sent to homeowners asking if they wish to participate; the program is voluntary.
The board acknowledged the report and proceeded to later agenda items.
