Bridgeport fire chief reports surge in September calls, urges fire-prevention steps

Fire Chief David Smigiel told the board that September 2024 produced 125 calls for service, bringing the year-to-date total to 1,011. Of those September calls, the department responded to 16 injury accidents including one with a loss of life, assisted Buena Vista on a large school building fire, handled multiple grass fires along I-75 and responded to a county hazmat team activation.
Chief Smigiel said October is fire-prevention month and the department will participate in multiple school events, Halloween activities and provide fire-extinguisher training for businesses. "October is fire prevention month. We will be heavily involved with multiple school events, Halloween activities, and fire extinguisher training for some of our businesses," he told trustees.
The chief also welcomed two returning members to the roster, Jacob Childs and Melissa Schluckebier, and said both will receive medical training soon. He encouraged residents to review family safety plans and check detectors; the department offered assistance obtaining new detectors if needed.
The chief warned motorists to give farmers space around slow-moving farm machinery because of blind spots and limited speeds, urging patience to keep roadways safe.
