The board unanimously approved revised plans to renovate the children’s playground at South Pointe Park, funding for which comes from the 2022 bond art and culture component. Parks staff and design vendor KOMPAN presented a concept inspired by marine life that adds a 30‑foot central play sculpture (dolphin), increases swing capacity to four seats (including infant swings), and replaces a rigid west‑side shade structure so the swing bay can be expanded.
Parks staff noted the design had been developed with input from neighborhood working groups and added an extra swing and a monkey bar at the request of parents. The vendor explained shading strategies, a mix of triangular sail shades and partial canopy coverage for taller elements; the design team said they had considered airflow and left openings at the dolphin’s upper sections to avoid heat buildup.
Board members praised the design and stressed the importance of shading and material choices so interior play spaces do not become uncomfortably hot during daytime use. The board approved the playground revisions and asked staff to coordinate final shade and surface details during permitting and procurement. Construction is slated to begin in spring 2027 with a projected 6–8 month build period.
The board also discussed sequencing and later phases; the splash pad renovation will be handled as a subsequent component and is expected to be programmed in winter months with a specialist consultant. Parks staff said they would return with final material specifications and a construction schedule.
