Board signs off on 72nd Street community complex revisions, leaves mural color to artist

Design and capital projects staff presented revisions to the North Beach Community Complex on 72nd Street that add seating, improve connectivity to retail, increase visibility into programmed open spaces, and offer three alternate color schemes for the garage screening mural.
Staff described changes that remove smaller shrubs to open sightlines to retail and add several seating areas integrated with plaza steps and retaining/seat walls. The project team also presented three color alternatives for two triangular panels in the garage screening art; staff said option 2 (a mid‑tone blue) best integrated with the mural palette but noted the artist preferred the original green.
Board members praised the added seating and the stronger pedestrian connections. Several members asked staff and the applicant to study a layered lighting strategy, in particular lower bollard lighting at the northeast plaza entry and selective wall and retail lighting to avoid glare while supporting evening safety. One member expressed concern about potential homeless use of benches and asked the parks department and project team to coordinate operations and lighting with police and parks staff.
After discussion the board voted to approve the revised site plan and directed staff to allow the artist to select the mural color (the artist opted for the original green but said she would consider feedback). The board also recommended staff consider bollards or lower path lighting at key entries and enhanced retail lighting to animate storefronts. The project will proceed toward permitting with the agreed refinements.
