The Stratford Selectboard on June 15 reviewed a forestry assessment of the 104‑acre Christie property as part of the town’s Natural Resource Inventory process and signaled a strong preference to keep and actively manage the land rather than sell it.
Chris Caron and Chelsea Petereit summarized the assessment, noting productive northern hardwood stands, about 22 acres of mature white pine, and significant ecological value along the East Branch Brook corridor; no invasive species were reported. The forestry consultant estimated current timber value at about $42,000 and projected potential future value between $100,000 and $190,000 over the next 20 years under a program of active management.
Board members cited long‑term revenue potential, conservation benefits, recreational opportunities and the property’s limited development potential because of wetlands and vernal pools as reasons to retain the parcel. The Selectboard agreed to explore formal Town Forest designation to broaden management and funding opportunities and to continue coordination with the Conservation Commission and Planning Board.
The board asked staff to distribute the forestry and NRI reports to the public, promote participation in the July 16 NRI public meeting, and consider inviting the County Forester to a future meeting to discuss management options. No vote to sell or transfer the property occurred; the outcome was consensus to retain and further study management and designation options.
