Stratford board won’t pump failing septic; owner directed to hire licensed contractor

At the Stratford Select Board meeting on June 29, Brian Hays provided updates on water-system repairs, meter replacements, service-line work and backflow-prevention installations. The Board said routine maintenance will continue and that conversations with property owners about compliance—including installation of backflow prevention devices—will be documented.
The Board also reviewed an inspection of a septic system on Spur Road. Brian reported the system was in poor condition with an unsafe, deteriorated tank cover and indications the system might not be functioning properly. The Board determined the Town’s septic-pumping service is intended only for properly functioning residential systems and is not equipped to address failing or hazardous septic systems because of potential liability. The Board directed staff to tell the property owner to contact a licensed septic contractor for service. The directive/motion was approved 3-0.
