Avon council approves community grants, one-time farm lease waiver and authorizes EV charger grant

On Feb. 1 the Avon Town Council approved several local funding and contracting actions, including Community Events Grant awards totaling $12,300, a one-time waiver of a Sub Edge Farm lease payment, and authorization for an EV charging station grant contract.
The Council voted unanimously to waive the Sub Edge Farm 2023 lease payment of $5,435.50 after the Town Manager reported the Phillips experienced an early frost and flooding that harmed production; the waived revenue is recorded to the Fisher Meadows Special Revenue Fund. "We have had a lease with the Phillips for about twelve years and they do a wonderful job managing the property," the Town Manager said in recommending a one-time waiver.
Council also approved Community Events Grant awards totaling $12,300, distributed as follows: Art Hennig Avon Memorial Day Soccer Tournament, $7,500; Avon Youth Lacrosse (Falcon Fest), $2,375; Talcott Mountain Science Center & Academy (solar eclipse viewing), $1,500; Avon Free Public Library (Avon Con), $350; Avon High School PTO, Senior Class Car Parade, $300; and Avon Little League Jamboree, $275. Council discussed possibly increasing the fund in future budgets to attract more non-profits.
In a separate resolution, Council authorized Brandon Robertson, Town Manager, to execute a Personal Service Agreement/Grant Contract under the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection for an $11,772.15 grant to install an electric vehicle charging station at the Avon Free Public Library; the motion passed unanimously.
In the Town Manager’s report, he said the town terminated a snow removal contract with Safeside Home Services for nonperformance and amended CRS’s contract to cover the properties originally awarded to Safeside, producing a net first-year increase of approximately $20,000; officials said the town is seeking financial remedies from Safeside in the matter.
Several appointment items were tabled to March 7 for additional clarification and Board of Education input.
