The Avon Town Council voted to continue Town Council Policy No. 17, the Elderly Tax Relief Program, and to raise the program’s income limit from $61,800 to $69,000.
Assessor Harry DerAsadourian told the council the program currently has 258 participants and provides approximately $281,000 in tax relief annually. He recommended the limit increase to retain current participants and allow new eligible homeowners to participate, noting nearby towns have comparable limits. DerAsadourian said veterans who meet the income threshold would receive an additional assessment exemption; renters are not eligible for the homeowners’ program but may apply for the State renter’s rebate administered locally, which has a lower income cap.
Councilor Erin Barthel asked whether the income limit could be tied to area median income; DerAsadourian said the town looked at surrounding municipalities and that automatic indexing was not recommended. The Council approved the continuance and the income-limit increase by unanimous vote.
The change takes effect for the program’s next application period and will be reviewed per the Town’s regular policy-review schedule. The assessor’s office will implement the change and notify current and prospective participants of the updated income limit.
