Avon proclaims March 12, 2024 as Girl Scout Day; Council recognizes local students and volunteers

The Avon Town Council on March 7 read and approved a proclamation recognizing March 12, 2024 as Girl Scout Day and celebrating the contributions of Girl Scouts of the United States and Girl Scouts of Connecticut. Chairman Dan Polhamus welcomed a room of local Girl Scouts, troop leaders and parents and read the proclamation highlighting the organization’s role in leadership, civic engagement and youth programming.

Councilors also used the Communications from Council portion of the meeting to recognize local students and volunteers: Mrs. Barthel recognized Avon Middle School student Avi Gottfried for building and donating cat houses to the town animal shelter and Avon High School student Saanika Tipnis for organizing card-making for IRIS refugees with the Avon Free Public Library. Ms. Ausiello promoted the Great Bakery Scavenger Hunt on April 6, and Mrs. Bratton and Mr. Weber noted local cultural and recruitment events for the Avon Volunteer Fire Department and barbershop chorus participants.

Council voted unanimously to approve the Girl Scout Day proclamation. Chairman Polhamus and several council members noted the coincidence with Women’s History Month and observed the current Council’s female majority.
