Middle school awarded $14,500 grant for trauma-informed 'Team Peace' program

Carol Eubank (S9), the district's middle school principal, told the board that social worker Kelly Wallman Covey secured a $14,500 grant to implement Team Peace, a nonprofit program that provides trauma-informed, neuroscience-based social-emotional learning (SEL) and resilience-building tools for students and staff.
Kara Schmidt (S10), executive director and founder of Team Peace, explained the program model: short, practical lessons for students, professional development for teachers, training of school staff to sustain the work, and a mix of in-person and digital content to support scalability. Schmidt said Team Peace emphasizes teaching why the brain and body respond to stress and offering regulation strategies that are immediately usable in classrooms.
Carol Eubank said an implementation team (including Heidi, Kelly Wallman Covey, Britney Bushey, Diane Turpin and others) will begin training July 27–28 and that the program will be piloted in the middle school PE classes with expansion as staff capacity increases. Schmidt noted ongoing research with Indiana University Southeast and described prior pilots in nearby districts.
Next steps: staff listed training dates and assigned personnel; the grant-funded work will proceed with coach-style support and digital materials to reduce long-term dependency on external staff.
