Wapello County Supervisor Darren Batterson called the Ottumwa/Wapello Solid Waste Commission to order at 4:00 p.m. May 28, 2026, at Ottumwa City Hall. The commission approved the agenda and minutes by unanimous vote.
SCS Engineers provided an update: the Solid Waste Comprehensive Plan update was submitted May 1, 2026, and groundwater sampling and second‑quarter methane monitoring occurred May 5–7, 2026. According to the report presented, there were no methane level exceedances; groundwater samples will be evaluated at a laboratory. The report also noted that leachate line cleaning and inspection are scheduled for 2026, and that Khalid Al Gharrawi is the facility's new project manager.
Solid Waste Superintendent Lori Creech presented the landfill and Recycling Center financials. Creech said the landfill is busier with the summer season and cited April hail storms that caused extensive home damage, producing several debris projects that are coming through the facility. Creech also reported higher Recycling Center volumes as weather warms. The commission approved the financials by unanimous vote.
During "Other Information/Discussion," a landfill employee raised concerns about current pricing for yard waste. Commissioners discussed the concern and directed staff to gather additional information and return with recommendations at the commission's next meeting.
The commission set its next meeting for June 25, 2026, at 4:00 p.m. A motion to adjourn carried unanimously and the meeting ended at 4:53 p.m.
