Durand reviews farmer’s market move, comprehensive plan schedule, bandshell grant and infrastructure projects

City administrators briefed the council on surveying vendors for a possible Farmer’s Market relocation, upcoming comprehensive plan public surveys, DIG’s T‑Mobile grant effort for the bandshell, cemetery mapping, and multiple Public Works projects including Madison Street and 6th Avenue E.
City officials used the Jan. 14 meeting to update council members on several ongoing community projects and initiatives.
Administrator Tracy Carlson said the city will survey previous Farmer’s Market vendors about interest in a new location and a possible change in date/time; no formal action was taken. Carlson also outlined the schedule for creating the city’s comprehensive plan, noting the Planning Commission will be engaged and that public surveys will be distributed soon.
Carlson reported that Mike Norby and the Durand Improvement Group (DIG) are applying for a T‑Mobile Community Grant to fund improvements to the bandshell and asked the council to prepare a letter of support. She added that Durand Cemetery mapping and data uploads are complete and that a public link to the cemetery data will be added to the city website.
Public Works Director Matt Gilles provided project updates: letters about the Madison Street project were mailed to affected property owners and WE Energies has started related work; the 6th Avenue E project design is nearing completion and a pre-bid meeting for the filter plant project is scheduled for the week of Jan. 19, 2026. Gilles said pool entry fees and donations were discussed and that if no additional donations are received, pool admission will be $4–$5 per person.
Police Chief Stan Ridgeway congratulated Sergeant John Schellhorn on completing Instructor Development Training Certification and said staff are training on new camera and taser software. Ambulance Co‑Director Angie Bignell’s written report showed 41 ambulance calls and 1 transfer in December 2025; the ambulance department is training on new scheduling and billing software.
