Union City seeks CDBG funds for stormwater repairs after sinkhole at Municipal Lot #1

Union City Borough Council voted Sept. 16 to apply for up to $100,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding to pay for a portion of stormwater repairs at Municipal Lot #1.
Streets Supervisor Bob Phillips reported that he and Borough Manager Cindy Wells met with Solicitor Tim Wachter about sinkholes in Municipal Lot #1. Mansfield is expected to fill the sinkhole, replace approximately 10 feet of pipe and install a new catch basin; smoke-and-dye testing will be performed after those repairs. The borough is awaiting paving quotes from JT Patching and Paving and Cross Paving for the lot and the catch-basin area in Municipal Lot #2. Business owners in the area and the Union City Volunteer Fire Department will be notified once smoke testing is scheduled.
Councilor Steadman moved to submit an application to the county for up to $100,000 in CDBG grant funds to cover part of the stormwater project; Councilor Osborn seconded. The motion carried unanimously.
The minutes do not specify how much of the total project cost the CDBG request is intended to cover, nor do they provide a schedule for the smoke-and-dye test or the paving work beyond the statement that quotes are being obtained.
