Lemoore council reviews eight city-seal finalists amid concern over AI-generated entries

The Lemoore City Council spent a substantial portion of its July 7 meeting reviewing eight finalists for a new city seal and discussing whether any designs show signs of AI generation.
City staff told the council the contest attracted over 100 submissions and presented the top eight for consideration. Councilmembers and staff evaluated each entry for symbolism (agriculture, Tulare Lake, NAS Lemoore and local education), print and embroidery legibility, color palette, and whether the designs communicate the city’s identity to outside audiences.
A public commenter, whose email was read into the record, urged the council to favor human-made designs and suggested the council require the winning artist to provide layered image files as proof of authorship. Several councilmembers and staff agreed that some entries display features commonly produced by generative AI and recommended either asking artists for source files or engaging a professional designer to vet entries.
Staff proposed ordering embroidered patches or sample fabric prints of each finalist so the council can see how details reproduce at actual logo size. Councilmembers discussed whether requesting changes would be fair to entrants, with some warning that major redesigns could defeat the purpose of the public vote. Several members said they prefer a simpler seal that would reproduce cleanly on clothing and materials used by staff during business outreach.
No selection was made at the meeting. Staff will return with options for verification of authorship, sample embroidery or patches, and guidance on permissible adjustments before a final vote.
