Council introduces ordinance to codify volunteer fire department priorities

The Lemoore City Council on July 7 voted unanimously to introduce Ordinance 2026-07, which would amend Title 4 of the municipal code to codify the city’s expectations for its volunteer fire department.
Staff described the item as a continuation of prior public hearings. The ordinance would define Priority 1 and 2 calls as mandatory responses for the volunteer department, with Priority 3 and lower responses designated as nonmandatory or discretionary. Staff and the fire chief told council that the codified priorities reflect current practice and will help dispatchers and volunteers by clarifying response categories.
Council members asked whether the new definitions align with the city’s dispatch protocols; the chief confirmed the priorities are consistent with the call center’s classification.
Council member Gornick moved to introduce and waive the first reading of Ordinance 2026-07 and to schedule the second reading at the next regular meeting. The motion carried 5–0.
The ordinance will return for a second reading and a final vote at a subsequent meeting.
