Public works presents preliminary walking-trails research; fire and recycling reports delivered

At the Nov. 18 meeting of the Village of Elk Mound Board of Trustees, Director of Public Works Mark Levra presented preliminary research—on behalf of JT Engineering’s Steve Lippert—into possible walking-trail connections between Lower Mound Hill Park and the Village Park and asked the board to place the topic on the December agenda for further consideration. "This topic will be placed on the agenda for the December meeting," the minutes record as Levra’s direction to the board.
Trustees heard a consolidated set of departmental reports. A Fire Board representative reported the department responded to 11 calls in the month and that department membership stands at 23; the representative said Chief Fuester is working with the attorney on a billing ordinance to be adopted by the three municipalities, that repairs are being completed on Engine No. 5, and that the 2025 operating budget for the department has been approved. The fire report also lists grants received for a fire-danger sign, an education banner, six pails of Class A foam and a battery-operated positive-pressure ventilation fan, and notes a relief valve was installed at Settlers Ridge apartments to reduce false alarms.
The Elk Mound/Colfax Solid Waste & Recycling report said the R.U. worked with R&R Waste Management to clean culverts, partnered with Cub Scouts for site cleanup in advance of a DNR inspection, coordinated with Jenson Farms on yard-waste composting, and will begin selling 55-gallon clear bags for $1 each at the Elk Mound and Colfax sites. The recycling report asked residents to break down cardboard before bringing it to the sites to speed disposal.
Police Chief Chad Weinberger’s report was presented and is on file with the clerk; the minutes record that the Colfax Rescue Squad monthly report was not available. The Community Center/Library Board approved use of the community center as a second alternate polling location and approved annual use of the parking lot for the Lions Club Lights of Love fundraiser.
Why it matters: The walking-trails preliminary research, if advanced, could lead to agenda items that affect village planning and park access. Fire-department updates include operational changes and grant-funded equipment that may affect public-safety response and inspection activities; the solid-waste updates include a new paid clear-bag program and operational guidance for residents.
