The Hudson Planning Commission approved a downtown design review certificate concept July 20 for an approximately 850-square-foot mural on the south-facing brick wall at 410 2nd Street, but commissioners required the applicant to provide a final image for review.
Staff (S6) said the wall is highly visible from I-94 and that the mural will be painted by a local artist and funded by community donations. "The proposed mural is approximately 850 square feet and is gonna be designed to reflect a Hudson community and will be painted by a local muralist," S6 said. The applicant (S3) described imagery she hopes to include'a steamboat, logging imagery, a raider, Willow River and hot-air balloons'and said she plans to use local artist Taylor Benson and crowdfunding (GoFundMe) to raise money, estimating roughly $15,000.
Commissioners welcomed the concept but raised concerns about historical and geographic accuracy of some images (bluff lines, steamboat design, Willow River vs. Wisconsin Dells) and asked to see the final design before installation. One commissioner suggested the mural incorporate downtown landmarks such as the arch or bandshell; others agreed to approve the concept while reserving final approval of the image. The applicant agreed to send the final image to staff (Tiffany) for distribution to commissioners for a last look before painting.
The commission approved the downtown design review certificate with the condition that the applicant submit the finalized image for review before installation.
