Gary Steele told the City of Hudson council during the public-comment period that residents of the Maxwell complex are worried about speeding on Maxwell Drive and have submitted petitions asking for traffic-calming measures.
"I'm Gary Steele, and I I live at Maxwell 1, Apartment 210," Steele said before describing an incident in which a vehicle backing out of a garage was struck by another car. He said residents originally asked that speeds be reduced to 5 miles an hour, but the petition presented to the council requests a posted maximum of 15 miles an hour and installation of flashing lights at the beginning of Maxwell Drive to alert drivers.
Steele said an earlier petition presented June 26 made it to the appropriate committee and that he brought a second petition from Maxwell 2 with additional signatures. "So I guess if if I could just give that petition to the right person at this time so we can get it to the right committee so the right research can be done to evaluate the real problem we have there," he said.
Council members acknowledged the petitions and told Steele they would place the material in the public record. The chair noted that the traffic safety committee already has the petition and that staff had forwarded an email to Erin for follow-up; council members also raised that some concerns may involve private property, which affects what the city can require.
The petition seeks two specific responses: a visible flashing warning at the start of Maxwell Drive and a formal maximum speed of 15 mph inside the complex. The council did not vote on any measure during the public-comment period; the next step recorded in the meeting was referral and staff follow-up so the traffic safety committee can evaluate appropriate actions or signage.
Steele thanked the council for accepting the petitions and for routing them to the committee. The matter remains under committee review and staff are expected to report back with options after researching jurisdiction and possible traffic-calming solutions.
