Public Works flags large gap in culvert repair estimates for HWY 72 crossing

Public Works Director Bryan Bechel told the Village of Elmwood Board on Oct. 14 that crews completed routine maintenance—repairing and painting a pole by the auditorium stairs, reconnecting a laundromat light pole with Hartung Electric, installing a new teeter-totter at the park, sweeping streets multiple times and repairing the bowling alley scoring machine.
Bechel said the village is seeking bids to either line or replace a rotting culvert under HWY 72 at the Omaha and Race intersection. HK Solutions quoted $40,000 to line the culvert. Pierce County provided a separate estimate of $2,500 tied to repaving after pipe replacement. A bid from Next Level is pending; the board has not decided which option to pursue.
Bechel also recapped the Community Clean-Up Day on Sept. 28, which produced several loads of miscellaneous items, including steel. The board did not take immediate action on the culvert at the Oct. 14 meeting; any contract or further authorization will require a future agenda item.
