Davenport recognizes Scott County Thunder Special Olympics team for state titles and national representation

Mayor Gordon and the Davenport City Council on July 8 recognized the Scott County Thunder Special Olympics athletes, coaches and volunteers for recent competitive accomplishments and long-term service.
Mayor Gordon presented certificates and a mayor's challenge coin to athletes and thanked coaches and volunteers for their work supporting athletes across ages 12 to 70-plus competing year round in 16 sports. The mayor noted the program has served athletes for more than 30 years and highlighted the Team Iowa basketball squad, composed of Scott County Thunder athletes, which has won seven Special Olympics Iowa State basketball championships since 2017 and finished fifth at the Special Olympics USA Games.
Sherry Fisher, adaptive and inclusive recreation supervisor for Davenport Parks and Recreation, thanked the council for the recognition and said the program demonstrates the city's commitment to inclusive programming: "By recognizing their talents tonight, you demonstrated to the entire community that programming and opportunities for persons with disabilities ... is important to Davenport." Team representatives presented the mayor with a commemorative bag including pins and player signatures.
The council invited the honorees to the front for photos and gave the group a round of applause.
