North Hudson public safety committee hears police and fire staffing reports, discusses Cratley intersection and Pepperfest

Police Chief (speaker 3) summarized department activity for June 10–July 7, noting three fireworks complaints during that span and observing that none occurred over the July 4 weekend. He told the committee he is conducting field training with a new officer and expects Officer DeBell to be independent by early September, returning the department to full staffing. The chief said overtime expenses are below the budgeted level of about $5,000 per officer for the year.
Fire Chief Spillen (speaker 5) reported that May was the busiest May on record with 76 calls and that June recorded 74 calls. He described staffing for the July 3–5 period, saying a crew of four staffed evening hours and collectively handled 11 calls over the holiday stretch. "May was our busiest May on record. We had 76 calls in May," Chief Spillen said.
On future agenda items, the chair (speaker 1) proposed a data-driven review of the Cratley/35W and Station Circle intersection; members discussed that the roadway is state-owned and that the village will likely need to supply accident reports and speed/safety data to the state. The police chief said he can provide accident reports and will attempt to pull speeding-ticket data if available. Committee members also discussed Pepperfest in August; the committee agreed to move the related agenda item to September to avoid conflicts with event setup and to consider a community bike rodeo in spring 2027 focused on helmet distribution and bicycle safety checks.
Committee direction: staff (police department and village engineer) were asked to gather accident reports, any available speed-enforcement data, and relevant development projections for the area before the next discussion. No formal votes or ordinances were taken on these items during the July 9 meeting.
Next procedural step: the committee will place the Cratley intersection item on a future agenda after staff compiles requested data; the August meeting may be canceled or rescheduled because of Pepperfest.
