Evansville council swears in mayor and fills District 1 vacancy; Bill Lathrop elected council president

At its April 21 organizational meeting, the Evansville Common Council swore in Mayor Abbey Barnes and newly elected alderpersons, appointed Bill Hurtley to an unexpired District 1 term (through April 19, 2027) and unanimously elected Bill Lathrop as Council President.
The Evansville Common Council met April 21 at City Hall to conduct its organizational business, administering oaths of office to Mayor Abbey Barnes and newly seated alderpersons and filling a vacant aldermanic seat.
On a motion by Ben Corridon, seconded by Erika Stuart, the Council appointed Bill Hurtley to the unexpired Aldermanic District #1 term ending April 19, 2027; the motion passed by roll call 6-0. Hurtley told the Council he has been involved with the city since 1982. City Clerk Leah Hurtley administered the oath and Hurtley took his seat with the other council members.
The Council then moved to select its leadership. Ald. Erika Stuart nominated Bill Lathrop for Council President; the nomination was seconded by Bill Hurtley. A motion to elect Lathrop as Council President passed 7-0.
The agenda and subsequent votes formally settled the council’s composition and leadership for the coming year. The Council approved the meeting agenda earlier in the session on a motion by Corridon, seconded by Lita Droster (motion passed 6-0).
The Council adjourned at 6:23 p.m.; the next regular Common Council meeting is scheduled for May 12, 2026, at 6:00 p.m.
