Council approves $7,918 grit pump purchase for wastewater plant after equipment failure

Mister Porter explained that a grit pump removes abrasive materials (sand, gravel, silt) that otherwise damage downstream equipment in the treatment process. Staff solicited bids; the city received an incomplete response from other vendors and identified a compatible unit from Haines Equipment. Because the quoted unit is compatible with the existing plant equipment and the failure required fast replacement, staff recommended approving the purchase under a sole-source justification to expedite repairs.
Council member Mister Dale moved to authorize the purchase from Haines Equipment for an amount not to exceed $7,918; the motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote. Porter said the cost will be charged to the sewer operations fund and staff will monitor the fund through year-end.
Next steps: Staff will expedite ordering and installation and use city sewer-plant staff to install the unit.
