Hempstead board adopts series of parking, traffic and accessibility local laws

The Town of Hempstead board moved on a package of traffic- and parking-related local laws and adopted measures covering multiple hamlets and villages across the town.
At the meeting the board closed public hearings and approved a series of ordinances regulating parking and standing in communities including Baldwin, Bellmore, Seaford, Wantagh, Elmont, Franklin Square, Levittown, Merrick, West Hempstead and Woodmere; established arterial stop controls in specified intersections; prohibited certain left turns in Baldwin and Woodmere; designated bus stops in Merrick; and created new handicap parking allowances on public streets in Bellmore, Elmont and West Hempstead. Board members voted aye on motions to close the hearings and adopt each item.
The measures were presented during the public hearings portion of the meeting and were moved, seconded and adopted in roll-call votes. Supervisor Ferretti and the other board members recorded aye votes when each item was taken up. The board also approved gross weight restrictions for parts of Baldwin and Oceanside.
The adopted package affects parking enforcement and traffic controls in numerous neighborhoods; the town did not provide text changes during the meeting but moved each item to adoption after the public hearing was closed. The board did not discuss substantive changes to the proposals during the meeting; officials said the measures respond to local safety and traffic management needs.
The board added the administrative calendar and adopted items 8–52 together, a separate procedural action that included an urgent rezoning resolution (see separate article). The town clerk will publish the adopted local laws and any affected schedules or maps as required under town procedures.
Officials said citations and local enforcement mechanisms will follow the town's normal implementation processes. The record for each ordinance will be available in the town clerk's office once the final resolutions and local law text are processed.
