The Paramus Pool Commission met April 9 at Paramus Borough Hall and confirmed multiple measures to prepare for the 2026 pool season, including staff onboarding steps, a small capital expenditure for promotional signs and a paid advertising buy for spring and early summer.
Commissioner Suzanne Frankland called the meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. and commissioners unanimously approved the March 19 minutes. Garrett Luna, borough liaison, reported that Peter Martin of Burgers & More attended to introduce himself about operating the concession stand. Luna said 90% of employee paperwork has been returned, that he will provide Pool Manager Stephen Trocolar with the employee list and new applications, and that interviews are scheduled for April 22, 2026. Luna also said online registration is being used and that registration will be handled at the recreation office to avoid inconveniencing patrons who come to borough hall.
On facility and grounds, commissioners agreed to a $750 expenditure for lawn signs (same sign as last year) and directed Commissioner John Valente to handle required paperwork and coordination with borough staff. Garrett Luna reported he is obtaining a price for a new wooden sign for the pool’s front entrance; the commission agreed a replacement sign is needed.
The commission also discussed a forthcoming update to the pool’s filter-room design by the aquatic engineer, and Commissioner Frankland requested the engineer include a heater in the new design. For competitive-start equipment, Frankland said she will consult Scarlett Aquatic about dome covers for starting blocks as an alternative to cones.
On outreach and programming, staff and commissioners are negotiating band contracts and planning community events: a food drive connected to movie nights, a potential animal-shelter event spearheaded by Commissioner Angelina England, and a water-safety or skills-evaluation day that Frankland said the commission hopes to coordinate with Stew Leonard’s. Commissioner Deborah Cassella asked staff to explore a skin-cancer screening day and to reach out to the health department and local dermatologists.
For communications, the commission opted for a five-week print plus 25,000-impression digital ad package on NorthJersey.com covering Paramus, Oradell and River Edge at a net cost of $710. The commission recorded that Garrett Luna is still working on a USPS meeting to arrange brochure delivery and will prepare a Google calendar of pool dates and events for staff and commissioners.
Votes at a glance: - Motion to approve minutes (March 19, 2026): moved by Commissioner John Valente, seconded by Commissioner Brian Casey; outcome: approved unanimously. - Adjournment motion: moved by Commissioner Deborah Cassella, seconded by Commissioner Brian Casey; outcome: approved unanimously. The commission closed the public-comment period at 7:06 p.m., addressed remaining agenda items and adjourned at 8:45 p.m. Next procedural steps recorded were staff scheduling interviews for April 22 and follow-ups by Garrett Luna and Commissioner Valente on banners, signage paperwork and advertising placement.
