Council opens hearing on airport zoning changes to reduce side yard setbacks

The Enumclaw City Council opened and closed a public hearing May 26 on ordinance 2837, a first reading that would amend the airport zoning district to lower minimum side yard setbacks and clarify building‑height allowances when the airport district abuts residential property.
Senior planner Winston Larson summarized the proposal: “The proposed amendments reduce the minimum side yard setbacks in the airport zoning district from 20 feet to 10 feet and amend a footnote to allow a structure up to 18 feet in height where the airport zoning district abuts a residential district,” he said. Larson said the amendments implement the city’s 2024 comprehensive plan by refining development standards to remain compatible with aviation operations.
Larson told council the planning commission reviewed the matter and recommended approval at its April 23 meeting. Staff outlined three options for council: adopt as presented, reject and send back for further review, or modify and adopt as amended. No members of the public offered testimony during the hearing and staff asked for a first reading.
Because this was a first reading and no formal adoption occurred, council did not take a final vote on ordinance 2837 at this meeting; staff remains available to answer follow‑up questions and will bring future action items as needed.
