Board advances Master Plan mapping work; watershed mapping may inform steep-slope ordinance

At the June 25 meeting the Canaan Planning Board discussed mapping work intended to support the town’s Master Plan and a possible steep-slope ordinance for the Canaan Street Lake watershed.
Member Mike Daniels reported he has been seeking vendors for GIS mapping software to help analyze parcel usage and support Master Plan development; he estimated the ballpark cost at about $3,000, noting the final price depends on how current town data are. Separately, Nick Lavalley presented a seven-layer map file for Canaan Street Lake watershed protection and said he will add a mosaic layer showing tax map parcel boundaries. The board said the combined mapping will allow staff and the board to quantify vacant parcels that could be subject to a potential steep-slope ordinance.
Members thanked Lavalley for producing the file. The board did not adopt any ordinance at the meeting but identified mapping and parcel analysis as the next steps in the Master Plan process.
