The assistant superintendent and principal, Michael Barton, asked the committee to approve out-of-state travel for 26 students to attend two sessions of the Edge of Leadership summer program in Brattleboro, Vermont, on July 21–23 and July 28–30.
"So the request is for 26 students to attend the Edge of Leadership summer high school program in Brattleboro, Vermont, on 2 sessions," Michael Barton said, describing the program as an outdoor leadership experience that involves teamwork, communication, problem solving and other exercises.
Barton presented a line-item budget for the trip: $600 per student (totaling $13,800), four chaperones at $600 each ($2,400), and a nurse on call for 43 hours at $40 an hour ($1,720), for a presenter subtotal of $17,920. Barton said High 5 is providing three scholarships that will reduce the net cost for some students. After the vote, the superintendent clarified that the previously described foundation donation would be used to offset roughly $17,000 of the total trip cost.
A committee member moved to approve the travel request and another seconded; the committee voted to approve the request on a roll-call/voice vote. Committee members who participated answered in the affirmative during the roll call. No member publicly opposed the motion and no implementation conditions beyond the staffing (chaperones and nurse) were recorded in the discussion.
The committee approved the request to proceed with registrations and associated payments; staff were directed to record the funding sources and apply scholarships and the foundation gift to offset student costs.
