Public celebrates courthouse rededication; residents challenge commissioners on solar claims and senior-millage outreach

The meeting opened in the restored historic courthouse, and Friends of the Historic Courthouse volunteers were thanked for fundraising and preservation work at the site.
Lynn McCarthy, city commissioner for Lapeer, said the courthouse will be open for the Grama Gala on Dec. 3 and described final restoration touches and display plans.
During the second public-comment block, Leslie Getz announced she is running for state representative in District 67 and asked for community support. Kelly Nolan (ballot-question committee) sought donations to buy signs for a proposed senior millage. Several residents spoke about solar installations: Karen Bochayco challenged a commissioner to provide sources after he warned solar fields could poison farmland and create noise issues; she called on officials to back claims with evidence and said she had not observed such impacts. Other residents expressed concern about battery-storage fire risk and long-term effects and asked for planning around emergencies.
Speakers also asked who will manage public programming in the restored courthouse; officials said buildings-and-grounds manages scheduling and a nonprofit Friends group handles fundraising and event promotion. Commissioners closed with routine reports including promotion of the Attica Days Festival, veteran-services metrics and a reminder about local volunteer efforts.
