Residents describe fatal crash and call for lower speed limits and enforcement on Clackamas Road

John Pfeiffer, who lives on Clackamas Road, told the board that on May 7 a motorcyclist was killed when another vehicle turned left in front of her. "Traffic really gets crazy from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., actually 7 p.m.," he said, describing delivery vehicles stopping in the roadway and drivers swerving to avoid them. Pfeiffer asked the county to consider lowering the speed limit, adding speed-limit signs and placing a crosswalk.
Rick Dodge, another nearby resident, said his neighborhood experienced a separate recent serious crash and urged neighborhood involvement and consideration of automated enforcement cameras as an additional tool. "The speeds are are ridiculous," he said.
Transportation and Development staff, speaking through County Administrator Gary Schmidt, acknowledged the location is on the county's list and said staff will prioritize it and coordinate with the traffic safety commission; commissioners said staff would follow up with an update to residents.
No new project funding or formal action was approved during the meeting; commissioners invited resident participation in ongoing safety discussions and suggested bringing the matter into the formal budget and traffic-safety project process.
