Interim Director Amy Willey and Trustee William Gurney of Brantwood Camp attended the Town of Greenfield Selectboard meeting on Jan. 21 to discuss the nonprofit's tax-exempt status. Attorney Mark Fernald, representing Brantwood Camp, said the Selectboard had denied the camp's application for tax-exempt status in 2025 and that the camp intends to proceed by filing a tax abatement.
At the meeting, Willey introduced Brantwood Camp and Fernald summarized the organization's mission and provided legal background on the camp's tax-status arguments. After a brief conversation, the Selectboard agreed to postpone further discussion of the matter until Town Counsel could be present to advise the board. Fernald stated that, in the meantime, the camp would move forward with an abatement filing.
The decision to table the conversation meant the board did not vote on any change to the camp's status during the Jan. 21 session. The exchange—initiated by Brantwood representatives without prior confirmation on the published agenda—concluded with the town and the camp scheduling a future discussion once legal counsel for the town is available.
Next steps noted in the meeting record: Brantwood Camp's attorney intends to file an abatement, and the Selectboard will revisit the exemption question at a later meeting when Town Counsel can participate.
