Greenfield Selectboard backs donated shipping containers for fire training; authorizes alarm repairs before Town Meeting

The Greenfield Selectboard voted 3-0 on Jan. 14 to support using two donated 40-foot shipping containers placed behind the town's fire station as a SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) training facility, contingent on a Code Enforcement inspection to confirm the placement does not violate set-backs or the well easement for Greenfield Elderly Housing.
Fire Chief Chaz Babb told the board he was seeking the training resource to improve on-site drills and said neighboring towns had expressed interest in using the facility. Chief Babb also updated the Selectboard on maintenance needs at the station: carpet replacement for the meeting room with a recent quote of approximately $6,000, a failing furnace that serves the meeting room and a spare furnace in storage that DPW Director Morris will check for compatibility, and a fire alarm panel currently in fault that cannot communicate with monitoring company Monadnock Security.
Chief Babb requested board support for the containers and answered questions about placement, cost and regional use. Selectman George Rainier moved to support the installation; Selectman Michael Borden seconded. The board voted unanimously in favor. The motion and vote were recorded as contingent on a Code Enforcement inspection to ensure compliance with set-backs and the well easement.
Town Administrator Aaron Patt and the Selectboard agreed staff could authorize spending before Town Meeting to ensure the fire alarm panel communicates with the alarm monitoring company, based on a quote and recommendation already provided to the town. DPW Director Morris will check whether the furnace in storage from the police station matches the failing unit's specifications.
Next steps include the Code Enforcement inspection of the container placement and follow-up on the alarm repair and furnace assessment. The Selectboard also recorded this item as part of the minutes and moved on to other agenda items later in the evening.
