Committee asks city to consider a Winter Springs Memorial Day ceremony

Chairperson Paul Dillman moved that the committee present the idea to the City Commission so Winter Springs will have a Memorial Day ceremony; the motion was seconded and the committee recorded consensus to forward the request. “I move that we bring up to the City Commission that we have a Memorial Day ceremony for the city of Winter Springs,” Chairperson Paul Dillman said when making the motion.
Why it matters: Winter Springs currently does not hold its own Memorial Day ceremony; nearby municipalities such as Oviedo and Sanford host observances. Committee members discussed looking to those cities as exemplars while keeping the city’s approach flexible.
What happened: members recommended that, if the commission approves the concept, the committee convene in October to develop a recommended structure for the event, including potential partnership with veterans organizations and city support for venue and security. Staff indicated they will include the committee’s request on an August commission meeting agenda; if the commission supports the request, the committee would return in October to plan specifics.
