Committee discusses veterans banner program: application window, fees and outreach

City staff updated the Winter Springs Veterans Committee on the veterans banner program, including application timing, fees and outreach plans for next year’s display.

Staff said applications may be submitted throughout the calendar year but to be included in the next annual display applicants should meet the established deadline of Oct. 1. The program’s timeline anticipates the banners will be printed and ready for display beginning January 2027, staff added.

Staff also spelled out fees: “So the fees…it’s a $200 for the initial program fee. If they'd like to renew it, then it's an additional $100 for the second year. And then…if it's needed to replace [a banner], there would be an additional $100,” the staff member said.

Why it matters: the banner program publicly recognizes local veterans and their families; timely communication about deadlines and availability affects who is included in the annual display and the committee’s outreach planning.

Details from the meeting: staff reported two paid applications arrived after the initial recruitment window and that staff will follow up with current banner holders before the end of the month to ask if they wish to renew. Staff noted the program requires families to provide photographs and allowed time for design and production so banners can be displayed starting in January 2027.

Next steps: committee members requested the banner program be promoted in the September newsletter and asked staff to contact nonresidents who sought to nominate local residents so those requests can be accommodated where possible. Staff said they will follow up individually with applicants and current participants.
