Students honored and Silver Spirits recognized as commissioners applaud Davie Respect Initiative efforts

The Davie County Board of Commissioners heard presentations from the Davie Respect Initiative and senior‑services staff, celebrating local youth projects and honoring a longtime senior‑athletics team.

Julia (DRI representative) and panelist Charles Willard described the DRI process for selecting youth projects. Emma, a student ambassador, described her "pillow project," saying she sewed more than 200 pillows and donated them to children in foster care through Blue Door Restore and is now making blankets and bags for additional needs. "I donated them to the Blue Door Restore so far," Emma said, explaining the project started after she learned a friend in foster care had little of her own.

Casey Kao, a Davie County High School senior, described 'Comfy Learners,' a summer project that collected clothing and school supplies for children in rural Vietnam and included more than 25 personalized note cards translated into Vietnamese. Casey said the box of donations was already in Vietnam and that the project had been covered by the local paper.

Later in the meeting, commissioners presented a resolution honoring the Davie County Silver Spirits, a senior basketball team that competed nationally; the board recognized the team's long record of competition and unveiled awards and a retired jersey to hang in the Brock Gym building.

County staff also gave routine reports: the county manager noted a successful Halloween event with no major incidents and promoted Senior Services' Veterans Day events.
