Board approves 'Portrait of a Learner' addition to strategic plan; dual-language kindergarten and proficiency-scale work to proceed

The Grayslake CCSD 46 Board of Education voted to add a Portrait of a Learner to the district's strategic plan and heard a multi-department update on curriculum goals, dual-language programming and assessment work.
Board members discussed stakeholder makeup and coordination with neighboring districts before approving the Portrait of a Learner, which administrators said will be developed through broad community input rather than a fixed competency list. "What you see on that list is what competencies we have seen coming from other portraits of graduates. These are examples," the superintendent said, adding committees and authentic engagement will determine final competencies.
Curriculum director Amy Gluck reported accomplishments this year including adoption of new math resources (K-5 Illustrative Math and a 6-8 program), increased student discourse in math lessons, and the start of a 5-8 standards-based reporting planning and design team. Gluck said formative-assessment work and development of proficiency scales will continue next year to clarify "success criteria" and help align grading, instruction and family reporting.
Gluck also confirmed logistical planning is complete for two-way dual-language kindergarten at Avon and Prairie View, with students to receive half their day in Spanish and half in English. "We're going to implement that two-way dual-language... at the kindergarten level of those two schools," Gluck said.
Administrators said the Portrait of a Learner and strategic-plan committees could include dozens of stakeholders to ensure a wide range of input; the board approved the motion after members asked for assurances that outlier feedback would be captured and explained even when it is not incorporated into the final plan.
The board also discussed implementation timelines and the need for ongoing reporting to explain how stakeholder input influenced decisions. The approval will move the district into broader engagement and design activities scheduled over the coming months.
