Brunswick honors two volunteers for 50 years of emergency service

The Town of Brunswick on July 9 recognized two local volunteers for half a century of public safety service.

Resolutions the board adopted honored Timothy J. Hudak, who joined the Eagle Mills Fire Department on March 1, 1976, and John A. Curran, who joined his volunteer department on April 7, 1975. Both resolutions recited decades of operational and leadership roles — including assistant chief and captain positions, committee service on truck-buying and radio committees, service in county fire-investigation units, and participation in regional emergency responses such as post‑9/11 relief and COVID‑19 vaccine clinic operations — and commended the men for sustained training and community leadership.

A board member read the Hudson resolution before a motion and second; the full board voted to adopt both measures. One of the honorees spoke from the podium, thanking the board and reflecting on the changing nature of volunteer ranks, saying younger recruits have not come forward in the same numbers and predicting "there's gonna be a lot more of us 50 year guys coming up to this podium" unless recruitment improves.

Supervisor Harrington and other board members praised the honorees’ dedication, noting widespread community reliance on volunteer emergency services and the town’s recent steps to ensure 24/7 coverage through shared ambulance arrangements.

The resolutions are formal acknowledgements adopted by the board and entered into the meeting record; they do not change town policy or budgets. The board then continued with its regular agenda, including departmental reports and several other resolutions.
