Bridgeport board approves budgets, union pact, property sale and schedules hearings; manager's report highlights onboarding and demolition

The Bridgeport Charter Township Board on Oct. 7 cleared a package of routine business, approving budgets, contracts and payments and scheduling upcoming public hearings.
Actions taken included approval of the 2026 Downtown Development Authority (DDA) budget and adoption of Resolution R25-13 to increase wastewater laboratory fees; the board also approved a three-year contract with the Police Officers Labor Council (POLC) for the fire division and accepted a $150 bid from James Branch for parcel #09-11-5-08-2303-000 on Bluebird Street. The board set township Halloween trick-or-treat hours for Oct. 31 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The board approved accounts payable in the amount of $718,611.13 (Checks #74355 through #74468). It also set a public hearing on sign ordinance text amendments and scheduled the 2026 general fund budget hearing, which will include action on a public safety assessment, for Nov. 4, 2025.
In attached department reports, Police Chief Skabardis provided the September police report and Fire Chief David Smigiel reported 124 calls for service in September and notified the board that five personnel would receive life-saving awards; Smigiel's report also noted ongoing public-safety outreach and recruiting updates. Manager Chris Shannon's report highlighted continued onboarding with Blackrock (target transfer from Abadata on Nov. 1), Cass River Trail permitting work with Spicer and EGLE, the court-ordered demolition of the Candlelite Bowling building and interest from a commercial investor in the Ferris Mansion.
The board recessed to a closed session at 8:38 p.m. for the township manager's evaluation, returned at 9:23 p.m., and adjourned at 9:24 p.m.
