Swisher mayor announces resignation; council acknowledges and outlines appointment options

The Swisher mayor told the City Council on Nov. 11 that she won a county election and will step down as mayor effective 11:59 p.m. the following day. "As you know, I won my election last week ... as of tomorrow night at 11:59PM, I will no longer be your mayor," the mayor said.
Council members discussed whether a formal appointment must be made immediately. Staff explained that if no one is appointed, the mayor pro tem will legally assume mayoral duties but will not gain mayoral veto powers; the council confirmed the pro tem retains a regular vote. After brief discussion the council voted to accept the mayor's resignation and noted that an appointment could be made at any future meeting if a candidate comes forward.
The discussion also covered the timing for any election filing and noted that once an appointment is made the office must still appear on the next appropriate ballot. Council members urged staff to publish the legal timeline and to accept any written requests from potential appointees. The council took no further action on an appointment at the Nov. 11 meeting.
