Kristen Dickenson, a representative of Turning Point, asked the Unionville Town Council on Oct. 21 for a municipal contribution to support trauma-focused counseling for the nonprofit’s youth program. "We are estimating this counseling will cost $35,000 for the year, and we do not ask survivors to pay for the counseling they receive from Turning Point," Dickenson said.
The council voted unanimously to contribute $3,000. The motion to fund Turning Point was made by Commissioner Gene Price and seconded by Jaren Simpson. Mayor Baucom called for questions of the council and, with none raised, called for the vote.
Turning Point’s request noted the organization provides counseling to survivors it says face higher risks of illness, school dropout and unemployment; the representative told council the services would continue "ongoing until they no longer needed the services." The contribution matches the town’s grant to the organization last year.
