Unionville council approves speed reductions and a package of contracts, appointments and resolutions

At its April 21 meeting the Unionville Town Council unanimously approved three speed-limit reductions, awarded maintenance and cleanup contracts, appointed a Planning Board alternate, authorized an audit contract and signed a resolution opposing House Bill 765.
The Unionville Town Council on April 21 approved a slate of unanimous votes covering traffic safety, procurement and municipal administration.
Traffic: Mayor Randy Baucom presented three resolutions to reduce speed limits from 55 mph to 45 mph. Council amended the Unionville Road resolution to explicitly cover both ends of the downtown stretch and then voted to lower speeds on Unionville Road, CJ Thomas Road and Unionville Brief Road. Each resolution passed unanimously.
Contracts and procurement: Council accepted the low bid from First Call Junk Removal ($2,425) for cleanup at 3706 Old Camden Road and awarded the town's lawn-maintenance contract to Refined Outdoors after noting that some bids omitted tasks such as handling holiday lights and flags. The council also approved a contract with J.B. Watson & Co. to audit the town's accounts for the year ending June 30, 2025 (base fee $7,250 plus fees for financial statement preparation and non-attest services).
Appointments and programs: The Planning Board recommended, and council appointed, Annette Harris as Planning Board alternate. Council authorized outreach to community service organizations to solicit ideas for the town's 2026 Fourth of July (America's 250th) events.
Policy: Council voted unanimously to sign on to a resolution opposing North Carolina House Bill 765 after receiving materials from the North Carolina League of Municipalities concerning the bill's effect on local development regulation authority.
Administrative items: Council approved purchasing HeyGov's clerk minutes service at $99 per month, approved payment of bills, and authorized a volunteer town historian and purchase of a digital camera to document town events.
All listed motions passed by unanimous vote of the members present.
