The Town Council of Unionville approved a slate of routine items at its Dec. 16 regular meeting, including minutes, vendor payments, an IT and website contract, repairs to the dais in council chambers, a donation to the Piedmont Marching Band and staff Christmas bonuses.
Finance Officer Darrell Baucom reviewed the town’s financial report, saying year-to-date income was $278,000 and that recent franchise taxes and sales tax receipts added roughly $59,000 and $6,500, respectively. He reported normal expenses of $123,562 and described the town’s income-versus-expenses position as favorable by about $200,000.
On motions recorded in the minutes, the Council unanimously approved the Nov. 18 public hearing and regular meeting minutes (mover: Commissioner Jaren Simpson; seconder: Commissioner Jeff Broadaway) and approved payment of pending bills (mover: Commissioner Gene Price; seconder: Commissioner Chad Simpson). The minutes show Council directed staff to withhold the final payment to Miles-McClellan Construction until the contractor installs the Knox box and completes yard reseeding.
Clerk Sonya W. Gaddy presented competing quotes for the town’s internal IT support and website hosting; the Council approved a Seedspark and WordPress arrangement at $639.28 per month plus a one-time $600 set-up fee on a motion by Commissioner Gene Price, seconded by Commissioner Jaren Simpson.
Deputy Clerk Melody Braswell presented quotes to resurface the dais in council chambers. The Council approved Kirkwood Designs’ $6,075 proposal to demolish and rebuild the writing surface in red oak with a clear epoxy finish (mover: Commissioner Andrew Benton; seconder: Commissioner Gene Price).
Kristy Dale and Sam Oakley of the Piedmont Marching Band requested assistance to cover unpaid band fees and equipment replacement. The Council approved a $6,000 donation to purchase two baritones on the condition that the band march and play in Unionville’s parade (mover: Commissioner Jeff Broadaway; seconder: Commissioner Andrew Benton). Finance Officer Baucom noted the town previously donated $8,000 in January 2023 and $10,000 in December 2021 for band-related needs.
On personnel matters, the Council approved Christmas bonuses: $500 each for Finance Officer Darrell Baucom and Deputy Clerk Melody Braswell, and $750 for Clerk Sonya W. Gaddy (mover: Commissioner Andrew Benton; seconder: Commissioner Jaren Simpson). Mayor Baucom then adjourned the meeting and extended holiday wishes to attendees.
