Council authorizes Headwaters Trail grant applications totaling up to $300,000 (plus smaller AARP grant)

Headwaters Trail Director Gene Townsend requested council permission to apply for multiple grants to support trail work at the Nov. 25 meeting. He said he intends to seek $100,000 from the Recreation Trails Program, $100,000 from the Montana Stewardship Program and $100,000 from Gallatin County Open Space, and to apply for AARP Community Challenge funding if available.
Townsend noted program match requirements: Recreation Trails requires a 25% local match (historically provided by a private match from the Talc Company), Montana Stewardship requires a 10% match, and Gallatin County Open Space does not require a local match. AARP grants are generally smaller (around $15,000).
Councilman Ed Tharp moved to authorize the applications; Councilwoman Roxi McDermott seconded. The motion passed 3–0 with Townsend abstaining from the vote. Townsend will pursue the grant applications and report back on awards and match details.
