Council adopts school-area parking ordinance, members cite improved safety

The Three Forks City Council unanimously adopted Ordinance #403-2024 on Oct. 8, amending Title 7, Chapter 2, Section 15 to standardize school-area parking restrictions.
Mayor Randy Johnston read the ordinance into the record. City Clerk Crystal Turner confirmed the sign inventory matches the ordinance language: signs say "Do not block driveways! 1-hour parking during school session unless permit displayed (Ord. #7-2-15). Events exempt." Enforcement applies roughly from Aug. 20 through June 6; sports events are exempt outside regular school hours.
Gallatin County Sheriff Sgt. Doonan and several council members said the changes have improved traffic flow and safety near the middle and elementary schools. "It is much safer out there now," Sgt. Doonan said, and an adjacent property owner reported students are parking in the far lot rather than on neighborhood streets. Councilman Garret Buchanan moved to accept the ordinance; the motion passed unanimously.
The ordinance aligns posted restrictions with recent changes to school entrances and traffic flow and formalizes enforcement timing.
