After securing the scene and learning the juvenile had disconnected from a crisis hotline, Sergeant Watson established and maintained telephone contact for about 30 minutes, built rapport, and persuaded the juvenile to put down the weapon and accept help. "Because of his actions, a young man who was facing a moment of profound crisis was given the opportunity to receive help, begin healing, and continue living," Chief Pauley said as he presented the award.
The department recovered a handgun at the scene with a round chambered and credited Watson's training and calm communication for the peaceful outcome. Mayor Lee Wilkinson and council members thanked Sergeant Watson and acknowledged the team effort involved in resolving the incident.
The award was presented at the start of the meeting during the mayor's report; Sergeant Watson accepted praise and highlighted the role of his team in the incident.
