Allegany County committee authorizes applications for two veterans grants

The Allegany County Ways and Means Committee authorized county staff to apply for two state grants aimed at expanding services for veterans.
Michael Meadall, director of the county's Veterans Service Agency, asked the committee to approve applying for the New York State "Home Access for Heroes" program and said the county's share of the grant would be $125,000 for the listed fiscal year. Meadall said the funding would enable accessibility modifications, emergency home repairs and corrections to code violations for low‑ and moderate‑income veterans so they can remain in their homes rather than move to institutional settings.
Meadall also asked permission to apply for the New York State Department of Veterans Services Outdoor Recreational Therapy Grant with a county share of $15,000. He said the grant would fund hands‑on training and therapeutic activities including agricultural and small‑farm instruction, gardening, beekeeping and related programming.
Both applications were authorized by the committee by voice vote. A committee member thanked Meadall for pursuing additional funding and noted the programs would expand services available to veterans in Allegany County.
What happens next: staff will file the grant applications with the respective state agencies and return with any required county match documentation if awards are offered.
