Calhoun County commissioners approve agenda, proclamation for March for Meals and $3.2 million in claims payable

The Calhoun County Board of Commissioners opened its March 4 regular session and approved a slate of routine business items, including the meeting agenda and previous meeting minutes, and approved several resolutions and board appointments.
Chair Steve Frisbie called the meeting to order at 7 p.m. and the board approved the agenda after Commissioner Jake Smith raised a potential conflict related to the SWMBH Intergovernmental Contract. Corporation Counsel Jim Dyer advised Smith that, in his opinion, the potential conflict did not preclude Smith from voting; the agenda passed on a 7-0 roll call vote (Res. 031-2021).
The board unanimously approved a proclamation declaring March 2021 the 19th Annual March for Meals Month, which Commissioner Gary Tompkins read into the record; Abigail Finn of Senior Services, Inc. thanked the board and noted the program is funded through the Senior Millage (Res. 033-2021).
Under the consent agenda the board approved support for a culvert replacement on E Drive North, a first amendment to the SWMBH Intergovernmental Contract, a MERS service credit purchase, local road agreements with Albion and Eckford townships, and two Calhoun County Economic Development Corporation reappointments: Mark Montross of Bronson Healthcare Group and Joe Sobieralski of Battle Creek Unlimited (Res. 034-2021). The board also approved a Native American Heritage Fund Board administrative services agreement that will provide the county $15,000 in annual unrestricted income to offset administration costs (Res. 035-2021).
Prosecutor David Gilbert told commissioners that jury trials will resume March 29 after a year of pandemic-related cancellations, and Assistant Treasurer Melinda Weaver reported the Treasurer's Office forfeited 1,200 properties in the most recent cycle, down 148 from the prior year. Health Officer Eric Pessell reported ‘‘over 30,000 vaccinations have been distributed to Calhoun County citizens to date.’’
The board approved claims payable in the amount of $3,201,571.50 for Feb. 12–Feb. 25, 2021 (Res. 038-2021) and adjourned at 7:45 p.m.
